Kick It Out chief executive Tony Burnett: “We’re pleased to see the government has today recognised our calls for the need to introduce a centralised system to report and record discrimination at sporting events.
The uniform data collection of reports of discrimination is an essential step on the road to a safer and fairer game. Yet for too long football has fallen short when it comes to transparent reporting of data.
Kick It Out believe the recommendations outlined by the Culture Media and Sport Committee, if implemented, have the potential to significantly address behaviour change and create a more welcoming game.
But football doesn’t need to wait until there is a government mandated obligation for discrimination data to be shared. The earlier football becomes fully transparent with its data, the sooner we can understand the issues that exist, explore how we address the root causes of discrimination, and ultimately develop a plan to create change.
Kick It Out also fully support the proposals outlined in the report to provide appropriate training and protection to stewards, and to address the barriers in stadiums that prevent accessibility and inclusion for all sports fans, particularly disabled supporters and women. All are essential measures to drive a more inclusive game, and Kick It Out will continue to use our voice to ensure they remain high on football’s agenda."
